A locally beloved hallmark among Deep Ellum coffee shops, Merit offers guests a pleasant experience underscored by an overall modern, open, and airy environment dappled with ample cushioned seating, natural sunlight, and dashes of greenery. While a superior setting for productivity would be difficult to imagine, aside from optimum functionality, the attention to detail that has gone into designing this cafe with a delightful balance of charm and utility makes it an easy go-to for daytime meetings with colleagues, long overdue coffee dates, or solo work sessions.

Merit scours the globe in search of the best coffee beans before ultimately having them delivered to a facility where they roast test batches, cup, taste, adjust, test some more and finally establish the perfect roast for the beans. Rest assured java connoisseurs, the folks here take their java sourcing, roasting, and brewing methods as seriously as they do their picturesque aesthetic.

Harboring the sort of visually pleasing yet edgy ambiance found in an alternative rock hit music video, this non-profit gem is dappled with an abundance of comfy couches, tabletops, charging outlets, and artistic flair, the eclectic atmosphere makes for a great place to study, meet with friends, or just relax for a bit. Aside from delicious takes on your traditional early hour favorites and signature beverages, Mokah also has frappes, smoothies, scrumptious pastries, and a well-curated selection of teas.

Fiction Coffee

The Continental Gin is so much more than just a historic building in Deep Ellum – it’s a true icon of Dallas and the cornerstone from which Deep Ellum’s history was built. What was once the largest manufacturer of cotton gins in the world is now an experiential office, neighborhood destination, and home of Fiction Coffee.

Nestled in the building’s lobby, the gorgeous coffee bar sits center stage and is surrounded by plenty of modern furnishings, trendy light fixtures hanging from above, wooden floorboards below, and exposed brick and textured walls to each side. The posh decor serves as an accomplice to daringly innovative, rewardingly delicious seasonal coffee beverages such as a szechuan honey mocha latte with an orange blossom spritz known as the Joy Luck Club Latte.

Murray Street Coffee Shop

Near and dear to the heart of Deep Ellum, Murray Street Coffee Shop was established in 2005 and has served as a welcoming setting where the community can gather over fresh coffee ever since. Though quaint, the space has plenty to offer, such as two upper mezzanine areas, comfy seating, several tables dappled throughout, and good vibes that creative people find stimulating – thanks in part to world-class art and an eclectic mix of music ranging from Chopin to Calexico, Kendrick Lamar to Robyn.

Furthermore, they feature locally roasted fair trade coffee beans as well as have extraordinarily good pastries and sandwiches with ingredients gathered fresh daily from sources such as Jimmy’s Italian Grocery, Rudolph’s Meat Market, and several bakeries and artisanal bakers.

Land of a Thousand Hills Coffee

Recently opened within Novel Deep Ellum – a seven-story entertainment and apartment complex at 2900 Canton Street near Malcolm X Boulevard – this newcomer to the index of Deep Ellum coffee shops has a light and airy interior complimented by the occasional touch of greenery, numerous seating arrangements, and very friendly service. Aside from artisan coffee beverages, Land of a Thousand Hills does serve cafe bites, and what’s more, a portion of all profits go towards funding initiatives and building communities in the most sustainable way possible in Rwanda.
